The Epson EB-994F features a 1.30-2.09:1 lens ratio with a 1.62x optical zoom, which is a genuinely wide range and means the same projector will fill a screen from a spread of distances rather than one exact spot. In a building with rooms of different sizes, or where the projector moves around, that matters more than any picture specification.


Unlike the rest of Epson’s current range the EB-994F uses a lamp rather than a laser light source, rated at 6,500 hours in normal mode or up to 17,000 in eco, so a replacement lamp is a running cost to plan for and the UK lamp warranty covers 1,000 hours and five years on the projector itself. Contrast is also a lamp era figure, well below the laser models beside it. In its favour, colour brightness matches white brightness as on all of Epson’s three panel projectors, so coloured slides stay bright, and connectivity is generous with two HDMI inputs, VGA in and out, wired and wireless networking, and a 16W speaker. For a room used in bursts rather than all day, the Epson EB-994F costs less up front and the lamp is a manageable expense.
