We now have our very own VPL-VW500ES in our demo room along with the dedicated Sony 4K media player which has varied content from nature to sports to movie sample material.

The VPL-VW500ES boasts a native true 4K panel (4096 x 2160 pixels) which is the DCI standard (Digital Cinema Initiatives, a joint venture of Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal and Warner Bros. Studios) in digital cinemas and draws on Sony's expertise in the professional cinema to produce a 4K native image with no artificial enhancements.

Ever present is Sony's SXRD display technology which has been further enhanced by reducing the physical gap between the pixels to achieve higher reflectivity, contrast and clarity of the image. In addition a 2.5 millisecond response rate results in images with natural, ultra smooth and fluid movement no matter how fast the image.

Positioning and set up of the VW500ES was quick, simple and precise thanks to a 2x motorised zoom and vertical(85%)/horizontal(31%)lens shift.

Following this we set the preset to CinemaFilm2, put the lamp mode to low then let the unit warm up for a period of 40 mins before running a calibration disc to fine tune the projector to our demo room environment (bat cave dark). If your environment is total darkness these settings are well worth applying, as ever image is subjective so if you don't like the result you can always reset to out of the box preset...

  • Calib Preset : CinemaFilm2
  • Reality Creation : On with resolution set to 40 in the sub menu
  • MotionFlow : Impulse
  • Contrast : 81

  • Hue : left unchanged at 50
  • Sharpness : 37
  • Auto Iris : Full

Following the basic calibration we fired up the 4K media player with the nature , sports and movie sample material. Having already seen the content and projector in action at Sony Headquarters in London, we knew what to expect content wise. What were eagerly waiting to see is what it was like in our demo room post calibration. A unanimous response from the team here was 'stunning'. A word that has in recent months been over used with regards to home cinema projectors but it really does befit the VW500ES. The colours were so vibrant and lifelike with no signs of saturation on skin tones.

The SXRD panels with the native 4K resolution really does produce an image that is so detailed to the point it really does make you feel you are there, clichéd we know but never the less true! The trailer we have on the 4K Media player for the remake of Total Recall with Colin Farrell has him on the balcony looking out on the city at night. The deep rich blacks of the night, vibrant lights of the city skyline with the neon advertising really pops out at you whilst every last detail such as advertising brands and or close up facial features can be seen.

The purpose made 4K sony trailers on the media player really are stunning with landscapes oozing vibrancy and detail. This kind of content really does need to be seen rather than read about.

We are awaiting some Mastered in 4K 1080p content to do a proper review of 1080p content on the VW500ES but initial thoughts are as you would expect at this price point top notch. The reality creation setting whilst a digital manipulation of the 1080p content does indeed bring some enhanced detailed to the image without adding any additional noise or artefacts to the image.

The Sony VPL-VW500ES has been awarded AVForums Reference Status and for all the right reasons!

Please note that the VW500ES is not compatible with the FMP-X1 available in the US so if you are considering importing one of these it will not work with this projector it's only compatible with Sony 4K TV's.  This 4K player is exclusively compatible with the 65in Sony KD-65X9005A and 55in KD-55X9005A 4K TVs

    Sony logo
The Sony VPL-VW500ES offers DCI based 4096 x 2160 resolution, delivering the very highest quality 4K content natively. The 4K experience is created using native 4K SXRD panels that utilise Sony's 4K expertise from the professional digital cinema market.

In addition, the projector has the latest HDMI standard, HDMI 2.0, to accommodate 4K/60P content, which allows the VPL-VW500ES to show up to 60 frames per second in 4K (at colour signal YUV 4:2:0). It’s the new 4K industry standard and is much higher than the earlier 24p. The result is a smoother image with superior colour and realism without the need for enhancement of the pixels.

Supporting 4K native resolution, the VPL-VW500ES also features an exclusive Super Resolution 4K upscaler called Reality Creation. This dramatically enhances high definition 1080p content, allowing viewers to enjoy 4K images with their existing Blu-ray Discs, even in 3D. Furthermore, the VPL-VW500ES has an original 4K up-scaling algorithm designed for 'Mastered in 4K' Blu-ray Discs from Sony Picture Entertainment, which enable the viewer to enjoy more accurate 4K native picture quality.

The VPL-VW500ES has 1,700 ANSI-lumen brightness and a 200,000:1 contrast ratio which delivers a sharper picture quality. The projector has rich colour reproduction thanks to TRILUMINOS display technology, an enhanced optical engine design and auto-calibration features. Its manual colour correction tool allows users to adjust the hue, saturation and brightness to obtain a picture quality customised to their tastes. Motionflow picture technology also works to deliver clearer, less blurry images when watching fast-paced, cinematic action.

The VPL-VW500ES is compact and has a front air exhaust cooling system. Its flexibility means it is cable of projecting large distances without having to alter the projector's position in the room. The projector uses a 2.06 zoom powered lens with a wide shift range which removes the requirement for additional platform extensions in ceiling mounts.

    Triluminos Display:
The VPL-VW500’s optical engine and SXRD panels incorporate our Triluminous Display technology to produce a much broader colour range, reproducing more tones and textures than a standard projector system. The result is greater purity, depth and realism.

    New Motionflow :
We’ve enhanced our Motionflow technology. ‘Combination’ mode uses our ‘Film Projection’ and ‘Motion Enhancer’, adding frames to reduce blur and maintain brightness in thrilling, fast-moving scenes. Cinema purists can choose ‘True Cinema’ to retain the original 24 frames per second.

Industry standard RF 3D compatible :A built-in RF transmitter synchronises with any RF 3D glasses for wider coverage, greater stability, and there’s no need for a cable.

Reality Creation: upscales your movies to 4K .As well as native 4K material, you can see your current Full HD Blu-ray™ or DVD movie collection upscaled for a 4K experience. Reality Creation is a Super Resolution technology that radically enhances Full HD content, even upscaling 3D movies for 4K.

Compatible with ‘Mastered in 4K’ Blu-ray discs :Drawing on the same technology used to downscale 4K material for Full HD, the VPL-VW500ES gives you a near native 4K experience with discs ‘Mastered in 4K’. It’s as close as you can get to the 4K-pixel resolution and expanded colour range of the original.

The latest 4K/60p HDMI standard: 60 frames per second. The VPL-VW500ES can show up to 60 frames per second in 4K (at colour signal YUV 4:2:0 / 8 bit). It’s the new 4K industry standard and is much higher than the earlier 24p. The result is a smoother image with superior colour and realism.

Auto calibration After extended periods, colour can be automatically calibrated to the original factory condition. There’s no need for extra calibration equipment or cameras; a built-in colour sensor stores all the necessary information.
