Sony's latest offerings have received high praise from some of the biggest names in consumer tech. Although as successors to the critically-acclaimed VPL-VW500ES and VPL-300ES, it's little wonder that these projectors stole the show.
The Sony projector that packs the most punch is unarguably the VW520ES, which comes with support for high dynamic range (HDR) content. With key specs including an impressive 1800 lumens light output, 300,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 compliance, Sony's latest model is a step above its 2014 predecessor.
Reviewers have reported being "blown away" by the projector, with many commenting on the incredible level of detail provided by the 4K resolution.
Vincent Teoh at HDTVtest was particularly impressed by the performance of the VW520ES: "The first thing that immediately grabbed our attention was the sheer amount of “pop” and detail on show from a native UHD (Ultra HD) source.
"All the facial pores, wrinkles and even makeup were palpably visible – there’s absolutely nothing obscuring the pristineness that shone through unscathed from the content to the screen and then to our eyes."
But Sony was keen to stress that the VW520ES isn't just for playing native 4K content. Thanks to its compatibility with 'Mastered in 4K' Blu-rays, and its Reality Creation upscaling technology, the projector should also help HD and ordinary Blu-rays look their best.
Although UK pricing has yet to be confirmed, a 4K HDR-enabled projector such as this will be at the higher end of the market. However, Sony's VPL-HW65ES, which trades HD resolution for 4K, promises to come with a more affordable price tag.
All three projectors will be available in the UK in October 2015.
