Sony releases new VPL-VW550ES 4K projector at IFA 2016
Sony has released a new projector at the IFA 2016 consumer electronics show in Berlin. The VPL-VW550ES 4K HDR projector will deliver 4k resolution and will be the successor to the hugely successful and popular VPL-VW520ES projector.
The VW550 comes with true resolution, allowing it to stream resolutions of 4096 by 2160. It also comes with a 20 per cent higher dynamic contrast with lumen brightness coming in at 1800 brightness as well as a contrast ratio of 350,000:1.
One of the neat features for the new projector is that it comes with a feature that allows backward compatibility for the projector to be able to stream on non-HDR displays. Called HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) this is an HDR transfer function which allows the backward compatibility.
Another advantage is the new contrast settings. The VPLCW550ES has a new HDR Contrast setting that, jointly with a Contrast Enhancer, allows the brightness of the projector to be boosted. Usually, this comes at a cost to reducing the black in HDR mode, but it is not affected with the 550ES.
The projector is incredibly user-friendly, with most of the features switching on automatically. An example of this is when switching between non-4k movies and 4k movies. The projector will recognise the infoframe from 4K Blu-Ray movies and will change the colours with this change. In terms of connections, it comes with HDCP 2.2 compliant HDMI inputs
The projector should be available for shipping towards the end of October and will be available in black or white.
