The first commercial smartphone to include an integrated pico projector has been officially launched in the UK.

From today, Samsung’s Galaxy Beam handset will be available to British consumers, providing the capability of being able to project pictures, videos and presentations stored on the phone onto flat surfaces for wider viewing.

The 12.5mm-thick handset was first unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. It runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and has a 1GHz dual-core processor, as well as 8GB of internal memory, 6GB of RAM, a 1.3MP front-facing camera and a 2,000 mAh battery.

Samsung’s vice president of the smartphone division in the UK and Ireland, Simon Stanford, said that they had already been delighted with the response to the phone when it was first unveiled in February, and were confident that the response would translate into commercial success.

He explained, “It’s the kind of device you won't find anywhere else - a high definition projector within a standard sized smartphone - and is great for people who want to watch movies, show photos to friends or need to give a presentation while they're out and about.”
