The famed Maltings independent cinema and theatre in Berwick upon Tweed has finalised its move into the digital era with the installation of a top-quality digital projection screen.

The screen was installed at the cinema this week, having been custom-made to fit the popular venue, according to the Berwick Advertiser. The new screen is the last in a line of new pieces of digital equipment to be installed at the cinema, including a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, a Dolby digital server, and state-of-the-art NEC digital projector.

The new screen will allow for the launch of The Maltings’ new era of programming, which is scheduled to start on 29 April. The new equipment will allow the theatre and cinema to start screening broadcasts of performances by world-renowned companies including the Royal Opera, Bolshoi Ballet, National Theatre and Opera Australia.

The venue’s head of marketing, Tamiko Mackie, told the newspaper, “Since we launched our new digital cinema system on 1 March, the feedback from the public has been amazing, especially with regards to the improved sound.

“The installation of the new screen further enhances a totally transformed audio and visual cinematic experience.”
