Retailers have reported better-than-expected sales for the shopping phenomenon that is Black Friday.

The event, now in its third year in the UK, drove a rise in offline and online shopping, with Barclaycard reporting a record number of transactions and retailers including John Lewis and Argos seeing a surge in orders.

Analysts said they expect Black Friday sales to better last year’s, when retailers amassed £1.9 billion in sales.

Barclaycard, which handles many of the UK’s debit and credit card transactions, said payments were six per cent higher than last year as spending reached £2.9 billion, the BBC reported.

"The Black Friday promotions at the end of November are the start of a longer, more drawn-out peak season, which begins with most of the activity online and then moves in-store as we get closer and closer to Christmas day," said Richard Jenkings, data analyst at credit reference agency Experian, told the BBC.
