Global sales of projectors neared 10 million units in 2011, according to the latest industry figures from tech market analysts, Pacific Media Associates (PMA).

The figures showed that growth had seen a solid double-digit gain in the Asian market, while the American and EMEA (Europe, Mid-East, Africa) markets had both seen single-digit gains.

The company said that a number of European countries had shown particularly strong demand for projectors, indicating that the use of devices in educational and business institutions was becoming increasingly commonplace.

PMA’s report on the figures stated, “In the Mainstream (500-4999 lumen) projector segment, aggressive pricing for education tenders in France, Spain and Russia helped drive seasonally strong fourth-quarter projector demand in Europe.”

There had also been a particularly large tender from the education sector in Indonesia, which helped to buoy Asian figures – particularly in light of rather slow fourth-quarter sales in the Chinese market.

Smaller scale projectors – categorised as the New Era (sub-500 lumens) range – unit sales rose from around 1.1 million in 2010 to 1.8 million in 2011. Pico projectors embedded in mobile devices such as cameras and camcorders showed the highest demand and biggest increase in this category of projectors.
