For all-round viewing at an affordable price the Mitsubishi XD221U is proving to be a versatile and valuable projector.

Equally capable with slides and movies, the machine boasts capabilities expected of much pricier models and offers them in an efficient and uncomplicated set-up.

As the device is a 1,024x768 XGA model you can enjoy DVD movies at their original resolution, as well as 720p HD content. The DLP video projection system with five-segment colour wheel effectively minimises ‘rainbow effect’ colour separation.

The XD221U offers two VGA ports and S-Video and composite video inputs. The twin 3.5mm audio inputs also allow for the simultaneous playing of a soundtrack and your own commentary.

Despite providing access to key settings, the remote control display is not back-lit, which could be tricky in dark presentations. It does, however, offer three levels of control - basic, medium and advanced - that make getting it up and running particularly easy for everyone.

For home viewing the projector stands up well, though not quite delivering the picture quality that more pricy projectors can. The quality of Keynote presentations and spreadsheets, however, is clear and precise.

The Mitsubishi XD221U also features a separate security slot and bar and a 10W speaker that makes up for its lack of bass with sheer volume. And Mitsubishi has thrown a bag in to the deal to prove that, despite being comparatively large and heavy, it is still portable.
