Our review on the Epson EH-TW5500 Projector

The replacement to the hugely popular Epson EH-TW5000. The EH-TW5500 retains the anamorphic mode and ISF features but now boasts a massive and unprecedented 200,000 : 1 Contrast Ratio and super resolution feature which improves standard definition material. An aesthetic improvement for us is the chassis finish has changed from gloss to matte black so no more visable fingerprints on the casing!

So how much better than the Epson EH-TW5000 is it?

Menu and settings wise not much has changed - a new feature on the TW5500 is a power consumption mode with two options "normal" and "ECO" setting to eco drops the brightness by about 20% and inturns increases the lamplife. The "super resolution" feature when turned on cleans up standard definition content to produce a cleaner crisper image but is severely limited by the original quality of the standard definition content. For the real home cinema enthusiast - colour gaumut controls are available.

The Epson EH-TW5500 retains the optics and Lens Shift as found on the EH-TW5000 which are the best we have seen as it has the largest zoom / Lens Shift range of any home cinema projector. 

Black levels wise the EH-TW5000 had a 75000:1 Contrast Ratio and had the best blacks on any projector in its price range infact any home cinema projector we had seen in our demo room. The new EH-TW5500 features a 200000:1 Contrast Ratio so we were expecting the blacks to be even deeper - and they were but were they over twice as good as the EH-TW5000 blacks? we have to say no.

As ever we have the benefit here in our demo room of being able to run a simultaneous side by side comparison - watched full screen on our demo room (approx 2.5mtr wide image) the image the EH-TW5500 produces is faultless with razor sharp, crisp detail and rich deep blacks. If you have the budget the Epson EH-TW5500 is well worth the money.
