Manufacturer Description for the BenQ W1200 Projector

Trusted Reviews rated the W1200 9/10 and had the following to say : "BenQ has managed to bring some genuine mid-range touches to its supposedly cheap and cheerful W1200 projector, resulting in an image that can look ridiculously good at times. The projector lacks refinement in a couple of areas, but it's still very persuasive, especially if your viewing room has a little Ambient Light to contend with."

What Hifi gave the W1200 5 star rating and had the following to say "Astonishing picture quality, value, plenty of adjustability, did we mention the picture?"

Full HD 1080p Resolution - The term Full HD refers to a native resolution of 1920x1080, the highest resolution HD currently available. With resolution at 1080p, you see each image in its full magnificent detail, and every viewing and gaming experience becomes more absorbing.

Full HD Optimised Optical System - The Full HD optimised optical system, which is comprised of 12 lens elements, is incorporated to ensure the best clarity and sharpness presentation in every Full HD image – giving you pristinely pure colors detail.

Full 10-bit Processing - Accurate color reproduction is what separates a true home theater experience from the rest. 10-bit color processing delivers over 1 billion colors in comparison to 8-bit technology, which only produces 16 million colors – painting every detail with absolute precision.

Adjustable Color Management - For home cinema enthusiasts with unique preferences for picture quality and color display, the color management system allows them to fine-tune every hue as well as the contrast, brightness, color temperature, gamma and white balance levels to best match their viewing needs.

SRS WOW HD Audio Technology - BenQ’s home projectors come transform your day-to-day audio experience into an over-the-top “WOW” with SRS WOW HD. This audio technology improves the dynamic audio performance of compressed and uncompressed audio by expanding the size of the audio image and creating a deep, rich bass response. What’s more, SRS WOW HD widens the horizontal sound field and raises the vertical sound image with patented techniques – retrieving information lost in the mixing process to create a more natural audio experience.

I have had the projector for a couple of months, using it to watch motorsport, films and regular HD TV such as news and soaps via Freesat. It is ceiling mounted and projected onto a wall with a 'Screen Goo' coating and diagonal image size of approximately 85". The room darkness varies from medium to dark but the image is very watchable under all of those conditions. The image quality is excellent and I have no complaints. As some reviews have noted, the cooling fan is audible and does occasionally vary in pitch; I am only conscious of this when there is no sound from the programme and it is never intrusive.

The unit was very simple to set up. One minor issue I had was with the image occasionally 'stuttering' (very short pauses) when watching films on DVD; I had initially set the projector up with 'medium' image interpolation so I turned that to 'off' and haven't had a problem since. I also didn't notice any change in image quality when I removed the interpolation.

Overall I am very happy with the unit. Minor gripe - the Benq label is upside down when it is mounted on the ceiling. Why isn't it reversible?
