Community cinema raises funds for new projector

A small, independent cinema in Oxfordshire has successfully raised the funds to join the digital age through the purchase of a brand-new projector.

The Theatre in Chipping Norton has been kitted out with all the high-tech equipment needed to replace their old 35mm reel format projector with a new digital model. Some £23,000 was raised through individual donations from the beloved cinema’s patrons and the local community, while Oxfordshire County Council contributed a one-off payment of £5,000.

The Chippy Cinema Reloaded campaign to raise the money, which was launched last June, had received the valuable endorsement of Oscar-winning actor, Sir Ben Kingsley, who lives nearby in Spelsbury.

The new projector and projector screen provides a brighter and more distinct picture, and will allow the cinema to screen live events such as opera and ballet broadcasts.

Senior projectionist at The Theatre, Robin Smitten, said the equipment will open up a new range of opportunities for the cinema that will help to cement its future in the town.

“Not only does the new system mean we can show current films and new releases, it’s wonderful that we will also be able to stream performances of opera, ballet and music through a satellite link – something which has not been possible before,” he told the Cotswold Journal newspaper.

An official opening and launch of the equipment will be staged at the venue later in the year.
